Apomorphine sublingual tablets (e.g., brand name Kynmobi, Apotab) are primarily used to treat sudden, temporary "off" episodes in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). These "off" episodes are times of reduced mobility, stiffness, tremors, and difficulty moving, walking, or speaking that can occur when a patient's regular Parkinson's medication starts to wear off or at random. 

Key Uses

Restoring Mobility: The primary purpose is to quickly reverse the symptoms of "off" episodes, thereby improving muscle control and allowing for more normal body movements.

Intermittent Treatment: It is an acute, "as needed" treatment for these unpredictable episodes, not a regularly scheduled maintenance medication.

Adjunct Therapy: It is typically used in addition to other ongoing Parkinson's medications. 

How It Works

Apomorphine is a dopamine agonist, meaning it works by mimicking the action of dopamine, a natural chemical messenger in the brain that is vital for controlling body movement. In Parkinson's disease, dopamine levels are reduced, leading to motor symptoms. 

Other Potential Uses

In some regions or in compounded form, apomorphine has also been investigated or used for managing erectile dysfunction. 

Important Note: Apomorphine sublingual products have been discontinued in the US market, but may be available in other countries. Patients are often prescribed an anti-nausea medication (e.g., trimethobenzamide) to take concurrently, as apomorphine can cause severe nausea and vomiting.
